Essential information for dataset reuse.
----------------------------------------

This dataset includes information originating from 172 scientific studies. Information from these original studies was extracted, summarised, and synthesised in 2023-2024, as part of a literature review published in 2025.

	Sheets:
Table S1: List of all 484 scientific studies that were screened, as well as information regarding whether they were included in the literature review. The "Exclusion criteria" (A. Context; B. Geographic area; C. Theme; D. Study type; E. Inaccessible) are described in Table 1 of the review article, and green and red colour signal if an article was included or excluded in this review, respectively. Of the 484 scientific studies listed, 172 were eligible for review.
Table S2: Contains extracted data from the 172 scientific studies, published between 1990 and 2023, that were reviewed with regard to connectivity and population structure in the Skagerrak. The data includes information about both the studies' methodology (such as scientific discipline, spatial and temporal scale, and sample size) and results (such as which populations were identified and estimated connectivity between different regions). Columns are grouped based on the type of information that has been extracted (e.g., methodology or result), using both colour codes and numbers (1-12).
Table S3: Detailed summary of the scientific studies that studied contemporary connectivity on a "large" scale (between the Skagerrak sea and adjacent seas). For species with information from several studies (i.e. on several rows), these rows are filled with the same colour, and a concensus result for the species was created.
Table S4: Detailed summary of the scientific studies that studied contemporary connectivity on a "small" scale (within the Skagerrak sea). For species with information from several studies (i.e. on several rows), these rows are filled with the same colour, and a concensus result for the species was created.
Table S5: Detailed summary of the scientific studies that studied population structure, both within the Skagerrak Sea and between the Skagerrak and adjacent seas. For species with information from several studies (i.e. on several rows), these rows are filled with the same colour, and a concensus result for the species was created.
Tables S6-S7: Settings for the BARRIER analysis conducted in the study.
For more detailed descriptions of the content of each table, we refer to a) the table description provided in each sheet, and b) the text in the original study.

Reference information
---------------------

Data sources:
This dataset contains information extracted from 172 published scientific studies in the public domain. The sources of this information are clearly referenced in Tables S1-S7.

Data Quality:
An assessment of the reliability of the results presented in each original study is included in Table S2, column 12A: "Certainty assessment (our confidence in these results, low/moderate/high)".
